# Orthopaedic & Joint Surgery Abroad: 16-Point Checklist

Hip and knee replacement abroad can be excellent value, but the journey home is its own clinical challenge. Get this right and you fly home recovered, not at risk.

## When to use this checklist

Use this 16-point list before booking hip replacement, knee replacement, or spine surgery abroad. Orthopaedic surgery abroad is increasingly common as NHS waiting lists have grown beyond 12–18 months in many areas. The procedure is mature and standardised internationally; the flight home is the part most often underestimated.

## How to use it

Verify the prosthesis brand (DePuy, Stryker, Zimmer Biomet are mainstream) and the surgeon's annual case volume (≥150 joint replacements per year). Confirm inpatient rehab for at least 7 days post-surgery and set the earliest safe flight date in writing. Line up NHS or private UK physiotherapy before you fly out.

## Before surgery

- **Confirm the prosthesis brand and model in writing.** — DePuy, Stryker, Zimmer Biomet are mainstream. Implant choice affects lifespan.
- **Surgeon performs ≥150 joint replacements per year.** — Volume strongly correlates with outcomes.
- **JCI- or NABH-accredited hospital with on-site rehab.** — Early mobilisation is essential — this needs hospital rehab.
- **Pre-op physio plan from your UK physiotherapist.** — Builds strength before surgery; reduces recovery time.

## Recovery

- **Inpatient rehab for at least 7 days post-surgery.** — Discharge straight to a hotel is a warning sign.
- **DVT prophylaxis: chemical (LMWH) + mechanical.** — Joint surgery + long-haul flight is high-risk for clots.
- **Earliest safe flight date in writing.** — Typically 10–14 days post-surgery for major joint replacement.
- **UK GP and NHS physiotherapy lined up before you fly home.** — Your discharge summary in English is essential.

## Red flags

- Implant brand not disclosed.
- Surgeon volume not disclosed.
- Hotel-based recovery offered after major joint replacement.
- Same-week flight home.
- No physiotherapy plan included.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: What is the most underestimated part of joint replacement abroad?**

A: The flight home. The surgery itself is mature and standardised internationally; it is the journey back — DVT risk, mobility, anticoagulation — that patients most often fail to plan and that most often causes trouble.

**Q: What are the red flags for orthopaedic surgery abroad?**

A: Implant brand not disclosed; surgeon volume not disclosed; and hotel-based recovery offered after major joint replacement. The last is the clearest: a replaced hip or knee needs supervised early rehabilitation, not a hotel room.

**Q: Why does the implant brand matter?**

A: Because it determines the published follow-up data behind the device in your body and whether UK surgeons can revise it later. Mainstream brands used in NHS and UK private orthopaedics have decades of data; budget alternatives may not.

**Q: Why are UK patients travelling for joint replacement at all?**

A: NHS waiting lists beyond 12–18 months in many areas. That is the driver, and it is worth stating plainly: the realistic comparison is usually not surgery abroad versus surgery in the UK next month, but surgery abroad versus another year of pain.
