About Turkey

Turkey is the most popular medical-tourism destination for UK patients, especially for dental, hair and cosmetic work. Price-led marketing is intense, so verification of clinic, surgeon and aftercare is essential.

Turkey leads UK outbound medical tourism by volume. ONS estimates 523,000 UK residents travelled abroad for medical treatment in 2024, with Turkey alone accounting for nearly 200,000 visits. Three factors drive it: low surgeon-cost relative to the UK private market, a regulated "Health Tourism" licensing regime designed specifically for international patients, and a critical mass of accredited hospitals and clinics in Istanbul, Antalya, Ankara and Izmir. The downside is that price-led marketing is intense, low-quality operators have proliferated, and the gap between the best and worst providers is wider than in most European destinations. The FCDO explicitly states it is aware of "7 British nationals having died in Turkey in 2025 following medical procedures" with cumulative deaths exceeding 25 since 2019. Verification of the named surgeon, the facility licence and the post-op pathway is the single most important step.

Regulatory framework

Turkey regulates medical tourism through several overlapping frameworks: the Ministry of Health licenses individual clinicians and facilities; the "Health Tourism" licence (issued by the Health Services Directorate, SHGM) is required for any clinic accepting international patients and is publicly searchable; ISO 9001 quality-management certification is common; and Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation is held by leading hospitals in Istanbul and Ankara. TÜRKAK provides Turkish national accreditation services. For UK patients the most consequential check is the Ministry of Health Health Tourism register entry for the specific clinic.

Accreditations

  • JCI-accredited hospitals in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir
  • Turkish Ministry of Health "Health Tourism" licence (required)
  • TÜRKAK ISO 9001

Safety considerations

Turkey is generally safe for UK travellers, but FCDO travel advice (gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/turkey) lists specific guidance for medical tourists: verify the surgeon's registration, prefer hospital-based surgery over polyclinics, and avoid clinics that compress major surgery into a 3-day trip. The British Embassy in Ankara publishes consular case data and provides emergency support; the British Consulate-General in Istanbul handles passport and welfare cases for travellers in western Turkey. Standard travel safety advice applies: avoid border regions near Syria, follow local laws on photography near military sites, and respect cultural norms.

Specific safety notes

  • Verify the surgeon — not just the clinic — has a recognised qualification.
  • Ask whether your procedure is performed in a licensed hospital or a "polyclinic"; only hospitals can perform many surgical procedures.
  • The British Embassy in Ankara publishes a list of UK nationals who have died after cosmetic procedures — take it seriously.

Travel basics

No visa required for UK passport holders for stays under 90 days. Direct flights from London to Istanbul are ~4 hours; Antalya is ~4.5 hours. Currency: Turkish Lira (TRY). Time zone: GMT+3. Major medical-tourism cities (Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir, Ankara) have well-developed English-speaking healthcare infrastructure. Plug type: F (European). Tap water is generally not recommended for drinking — bottled water is standard.

Recovery and flight home

For cosmetic and major surgery, in-country recovery is essential before flying. Minimums: BBL 10–14 days, abdominoplasty 7–10 days, breast surgery 7 days, rhinoplasty 5 days, dental implant surgery 24 hours. Direct flights to the UK are 4 hours — manageable for most post-op patients, but compression and mobility precautions still apply. Many clinics partner with recovery hotels in Istanbul and Antalya; these are appropriate for cosmetic recovery but not a substitute for hospital stay after major procedures.

NHS reimbursement

Turkey is outside the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive 2011/24/EU. The S2 funded-treatment scheme does not apply. UK-Turkey healthcare cooperation agreements do not extend to elective medical tourism. Assume self-funded with no NHS reimbursement. NHS will still treat emergencies in any UK resident regardless of where treatment was received, but elective revision is rarely funded.

FAQ: medical tourism in Turkey

Because the consular case data justifies it. The FCDO has published repeated notices about UK nationals who have died after cosmetic procedures in Turkey, mostly in unlicensed facilities. The notice does not say "do not travel" — it says verify the surgeon, the facility licence and the post-op pathway. The risk is concentrated in low-cost cosmetic surgery; dental and hair restoration have a much better safety profile.

Search the Ministry of Health's Health Tourism register at shgmturizmdb.saglik.gov.tr. The clinic should provide its licence number on request; if they cannot or will not, that is your answer. Cross-reference the named surgeon on the Turkish Medical Association register (ttb.org.tr).

Yes — but read the small print. Standard travel insurance does not cover complications from elective medical procedures. Specialist medical-tourism cover (Globelink, AllClear) is available. Confirm in writing exactly what is covered and what the excess is.

Direct flights to the UK are 4 hours. After cosmetic surgery, minimum in-country recovery applies (5–14 days depending on procedure). For dental work, 24-hour delay is standard. Compression stockings, hydration and mobility precautions reduce DVT risk on any post-op flight.

Contact the operating clinic's emergency number first. For non-clinic emergencies, the British Embassy in Ankara (Çankaya district) and the British Consulate-General in Istanbul (Beyoğlu district) provide consular support. Emergency number 112 reaches Turkish ambulance services; many private hospitals accept direct walk-in.

Not in major international clinics. English is the working language of clinical coordinators, surgeons and most medical staff at licensed health-tourism facilities. Hospital reception, taxis and recovery hotels may be in Turkish only — use a translation app and your clinic coordinator.
