Travel insurance for treatment abroad: what is and isn't covered

2026-03-30 5 min readby cliniccheck team

Standard travel insurance excludes most complications of elective treatment. Specialist policies exist. Here is how to read them.

The default assumption — that your annual travel insurance will cover you if your cosmetic surgery goes wrong — is almost always wrong. Read your policy.

Most standard travel insurance policies exclude:

  • Any treatment you travelled specifically to receive
  • Complications of elective surgery
  • Pre-existing conditions affecting your decision to travel

Specialist medical-tourism insurance does exist. Providers include Globelink, AllClear and a small number of brokers. Coverage typically includes complications during the trip, repatriation, and (sometimes) revision surgery.

Read the small print. Confirm in writing exactly what is covered and what the excess is.
