Flying home after surgery: the rules nobody tells you

DVT risk, cabin pressure, hand-luggage medication and what to do if you feel unwell at altitude. The post-op flight is its own procedure.

Most complications of treatment abroad show up after you fly home — not because the treatment was poor, but because the flight itself is a clinical event.

DVT risk

Any major surgery increases clot risk for 4–6 weeks. A long-haul flight in that window multiplies it. Ask your surgeon for written guidance on:

  • Earliest safe flight date
  • Whether you need TED stockings, mechanical pumps or LMWH injections
  • What symptoms should make you seek immediate help

Cabin pressure

Affects healing in sinus and dental procedures. 24 hours is the usual minimum wait after dental surgery; longer for sinus.

Documentation

Carry your discharge summary, prescription list and emergency contact card in hand luggage. Photograph everything in case the originals are lost.
