Dental Treatment Abroad: 22-Point Checklist

Dental work abroad is the most common medical-tourism category for UK patients. Most journeys go well — the ones that don't usually involve avoidable shortcuts.

Red flags — walk away if you see these

Promises of "full mouth in 3 days" with immediate-load implants on day one.
No CBCT scan taken before implant surgery.
No named brand on the implants or crowns.
Single-price quotes with no per-tooth breakdown.
Refusal to release radiographs or clinical notes.

Before you book

Get a written treatment plan from a UK dentist first.
You need an independent baseline. Take X-rays and CBCT scans with you.
Confirm the brand of implants, crowns and materials.
Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Zimmer are mainstream. "Premium" generic implants are not equivalent.
Ask for a list of UK dentists who can perform aftercare.
Most UK dentists will not warranty work done abroad. Find one who will, in advance.
Confirm the warranty in writing: what, how long, and who pays for the return flight if revision is needed.
5–10 year warranties are standard for implants; lifetime warranties are usually marketing.

On the clinic visit

Insist on seeing the dental surgeon — not a coordinator — before any work begins.
A consultation on day one of arrival is acceptable; surgery on day one is not.
Request that bone grafts and sinus lifts heal before implants are placed.
Immediate-load implants are a clinical decision, not a sales option.
Verify sterile technique: sealed sterilisation pouches opened in front of you.
Cross-infection risk is real and easy to verify.
Confirm anaesthesia type and who administers it.
Sedation by an anaesthetist is different from local by the dentist.
Get the implant batch number and serial number on your discharge papers.
You will need this for any future treatment.

After treatment

Schedule a UK dental check at 1 month and 6 months.
Early problems are easier to fix than late ones.
Keep all radiographs and clinical notes.
Request them digitally before you leave the clinic.
Avoid flying within 24 hours of dental surgery.
Pressure changes can affect healing sockets.
Soft-food diet for the first 7–10 days.
Your clinic should give you a written aftercare plan.
