Hair Transplant Abroad: 17-Point Checklist

Hair restoration has become Turkey's signature procedure for UK patients. Most clinics are good. Some are factories. The checklist below is how to tell the difference before you fly.

When to use this checklist

Use this 17-point list before booking FUE or DHI abroad. The Turkish hair-transplant market is the highest-volume in the world for UK patients; clinic quality varies dramatically. The single most important question this checklist forces you to ask: does the surgeon, not a technician, personally make the recipient incisions?

How to use it

Run through every item before paying a deposit. Verify the surgeon's licence on the Turkish Ministry of Health register (shgmturizmdb.saglik.gov.tr) or the relevant local register. Take baseline photographs of your donor and recipient areas before surgery; they are essential for any future warranty claim.

Red flags — walk away if you see these

  • Quote on Instagram DM with no clinical assessment.
  • Surgeon never named or never met.
  • Procedure in a hotel suite or unlicensed facility.
  • Graft promises of 6,000+ in a single session.
  • "Lifetime guarantee" without conditions.
  • Patient reviews only on the clinic's own social channels.

Verify the surgeon's role

  • Confirm the surgeon — not a technician — designs the hairline.
This is the single most consequential decision in the procedure.
  • Confirm the surgeon — not a technician — makes the recipient incisions.
Technician-only clinics exist in Turkey. Ask the direct question.
  • Ask the maximum graft count for your donor area, and how it was assessed.
5,000+ graft quotes are often unrealistic and damaging.
  • Verify the surgeon is licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Health.
    Public register: sbu.saglik.gov.tr.

The procedure

  • Choose FUE or DHI based on suitability, not marketing.
DHI is not always "better" — it suits specific donor patterns.
  • Confirm the procedure is performed in a licensed clinic, not a hotel room.
    This is illegal and dangerous.
  • Sterile field maintained throughout — see it.
Two-room setup, fresh gloves between phases.
  • Total session no longer than 7–8 hours.
Longer sessions outside this window risk graft survival.

Aftercare

  • Written aftercare schedule covering days 0–14 and months 1, 3, 6, 12.
Photographs at each milestone help judge final result.
  • PRP or growth-factor add-ons clearly priced and clinically justified.
Upsells in the chair are a warning sign.
  • Confirm what is covered if grafts fail to take.
Most clinics offer free top-ups after 12 months for genuine failure — get it in writing.
